No ECG Readings? Troubleshooting Common Connection Issues

ECG Showing 'Leads Off' When Connected to a Patient

If the ECG leads are connected to the patient but no readings appear on the screen, this is often due to expired or improperly stored electrodes.

Tip: Always store ECG electrodes in a sealed, airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Troubleshooting Steps

Replace the Electrodes

  • Open a new pack of electrodes and reapply them to the patient.
  • Start with limb leads, then reapply chest leads if needed.

Check the Clips

  • Ensure the clips are clean and free of any excess gel.

Apply Electrodes Correctly

  • Press only the sides when applying the electrodes.
  • Do not press the center, as this can spread the gel and interfere with the connection.

Prepare the Skin

  • Clean the skin with an alcohol wipe before applying electrodes.
  • Remove any moisturizing cream, deodorant, perfume, or sunscreen that could affect the connection.
  • Wait 60 seconds for the skin to dry before reapplying the electrodes.

Check Electrode Placement

  • Ensure the electrodes are positioned correctly.
  • Download a lead placement guide from our website:

Recommended Electrodes: We suggest using Ambu Blue Sensor SUPATab electrodes (SU-00-C) for the best results.

Testing for Lead Faults

If you are still unable to obtain a reading after performing these checks, the issue may relate to a fault. To check if the leads are functioning correctly, follow these steps:

  • Clip all the leads onto a single, flat piece of conductive metal, such as a breadknife, metal trolley, metal ruler, or kidney dish.
  • If the ECG displays a flat-line reading while all leads are clipped onto the metal surface, this confirms that all leads are functioning correctly.
  • If no flat-line trace appears, the leads may be faulty. In this case, contact a support technician for further assistance.
